Best things to see in Rome, Italy

It is possible to see some of the most famous parts of Rome in a day?

Yes, it is possible. If you only have 1 day to visit Rome, I would advise not to visit the Colosseum from the inside, but only from the outside.
If you plant to visit Rome in the summer, I recommend you to start the tour at 7am, following my plan, and in 1 day you will visit the most importnant and beautiful places in Rome.
To visit Rome in 1 day, it is possible to start the tour from the Colosseum and end it at the Vatican, or the other way: to start in the morning at the Vatican, and to end it at the Colosseum.

How to see the BEST of Rome in one day itinerary

Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

The Colosseum is famous in the whole world: is the most important monument in Rome. If you wish to see the Colosseum from the inside, you will need to buy the ticket beforehand. With this ticket you will be able to see also the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill.

Imperial Forums in Rome

Monumental squares built by the Roman imperators. These Forums were cultural, political and religious centers of the Empire. It is possible to visit imperial Forums by entering the Museum of Imperial Forums opened in 2007. We will visit the Imperial Forums with our walk from the Colosseum to Piazza Venezia, in this is zone we will also see Trajan's Column.

Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia

One of the most important monuments in Italy, the Altare della Patria is where most of the national celebrations are held. It is located in Piazza Venezia, where we will find the oldest palace in Rome, Palazzo Venezia.

Piazza Campidoglio

It is the most important municipal square, it was designed in its entirety by Michelangelo. Here you can also see the Musei Capitolini. In the center of the square you will find the renowed statue of Marcus Aurelius.

The Theatre of Marcellus and Jewish Ghetto

The Theatre of Marcellus is an ancient theatre built 2000 years ago, very well preserved till our days. The most famous actor that the theatre had seen was Emperor Nerone, who organized many shows for the ancient Romans. Nearby, we will find the Jewish Ghetto, with many interesting places to visit and where I advise you to eat, with many delicious restaurants regularly visited by locals.

Piazza Campo di Fiore

It is a famous place where we will find the oldest market in Rome. Over a period of 500 years, this market has been open everyday, and locals and tourists arrive to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, salami, olive oil and wine and other typical products. Do not miss the statue of Giordano Bruno, a famous philosopher, in the center of the market, who was burned at the stake in that same place by the Inquisition in February, 1600.

Piazza Navona

The most famous Baroque-style square in Rome, with 3 beautiful fountains. It is the locals' favorite place to have a nice walk in the evening, with the beautiful lighting of the monuments. In this square you will find many restaurants but I don't recommend eating there: the quality is not the best and the prices are the highest.

Pantheon

The only monument in Rome which has remained intact over the course of 2000 years. In the ancient times it a temple dedicated to all the Greek gods, but since 608 A.D. is has been converted to Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres. In the Pantheon is buried the famous painter Raffaello and the kingVittorio Emanuele II di Savoia. The ticket's cost is 5€ and it is necessary to buy it beforehand.

Trevi Fountain

The most famous and beautiful fountain of Rome. It is tradition, here, to throw a coin using the right hand over the left shoulder: it's said that if you throw one coin, you will come back in Rome one day, if you throw two coins you will meet the love of your life, if you throw three, any of your desire will come true. Each year 1.5 million euros are collected from the fountain. With the money, the municipality feeds the homeless people of Rome.

Piazza di Spagna & The Spanish Steps

Another place full of important monuments which is not to be missed. With its beautiful and famous fountain La Barcaccia and the Spanish Steps (135 steps!) it's one of the most popular places in the city. It's located in the shopping zone. From Piazza di Spagna it is possible to arrive to the Vatican in 30 min, following Via Condotti. It is also possible to take the subway to Ottaviano station (15 min) or take a taxi for 15€ more or less.

Vatican City

The Vatican City is a city-state, and is the smallest sovereign state in the world both by population (869 inhabitants) and by territorial extension (0,44km²).It is possible to enter the historic Vatican site (Basilica San Pietro and Piazza San Pietro) for free, but if you want to visit the Sistine Chapel or the Vatican Museums, you'll need to pay 8-17€.

You can privately walk this itinerary or you can book a tour with me, and I will show you all these important and beautiful places, I will tell you interesting stories about Rome and we will taste its amazing, local and traditional food together.
